At every well check from age 2 months to 5 years we ask parents to complete a survey called the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, which gives a detailed picture of your child's skills in five areas of development: fine motor, gross motor, speech, social, and problem solving. This provides a rich framework for discussing your child's progress and a valuable tool for early identification of developmental concerns.
For patients with asthma and other pulmonary problems we will schedule a computer-based assessment of lung function called a spiromtry test. Your child simply blows hard into a tube and a graph of air flow through the lungs is produced. A medication to open the airways is given and the test is repeated. This can help to determine if a child has asthma and also aids in adjusting inhaler treatments for children who are currently asthmatic.
The IMPACT test is a computer-based assessment of a patient's thinking ability, developed by the NFL and NHL for evaluation of athletes who have had a concussion. A baseline test provides an individual starting point. After a concussion, subsequent testing tells when it is safe for your child to return to school, practice or competition. We offer IMPACT testing to all children over age 11.
We do rapid testing in the office for strep throat infections, influenza A and B and mononucleosis. We also perform testing for urine infection, blood sugar or glucose, hemoglobin or iron status, oxygen level and pregnancy. Vision screening is offered at all well check visits after age 4 years.
